Remote and inaccessible to vehicles, Katmai National Park was established to keep the 40-square-mile Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes ash flow untouched and intact. Caused by the eruption of Novarupta Volcano in 1912, the ash runs between 100 and 700 feet deep and during the summer daily ranger-guided tours take visitors to explore and learn about this massive ash deposit. The biggest draws of the park are due to its wildlife, namely bears and fish. Brooks Camp, accessible only by boat or air taxi, is located right along Brooks River and offers amazing bear watching opportunities, as do a number of other dedicated sites around the park that offer bear viewing platforms. Sport fishing offers amazing yields at the park, including catches of trophy rainbow trout, grayling, dolly varden and seasonal runs of sockeye and coho salmon. The best features of this amazing park are only lightly touched due to its location on the Alaskan Peninsula, far from all major roads and towns.
Open daily year round. Brooks Camp services offered Jun - mid-Sep.
Free entry. Overnight rates vary, check website for details.
